Key Roles of a Peer Support Specialist:

  • Offering encouragement and understanding through shared experiences.

  • Assisting individuals in accessing community services, treatment, and support groups.

  • Helping clients speak up for their needs and supporting them in their recovery goals.

  • Modeling recovery and resilience to encourage personal growth.

  • Leading or co-leading support groups, recovery meetings, or wellness activities.

Why Peer Support Matters

Research shows that peer support improves recovery outcomes by reducing relapse rates, increasing engagement in treatment, and fostering a sense of belonging. Because peers have firsthand knowledge of the recovery process, they build strong, trusting relationships with those they support.
